Imperial Russian Stout belongs to the category of ultra strong beers. However, it has its own history: at the time of Catherine the Great, the English ambassador in St. Petersburg regularly had stout supplied from home. To prevent the beer from being damaged during transport across the cold Baltic Sea, it was brewed stronger. In the belief that the ambassador would dilute it with water before consuming it. At a dinner, undiluted stout was served to Tsarina Catherine. She was so enthusiastic about it that she also had the beer delivered to the Tsar’s court.
